The Vickers Wellington was a British twin engine medium bomber plane. In fact, the Wellingtons was the most produced bomber plane of during World War II. Besides bombing missions, they served in reconnaissance and anti-submarine duties as well. Since the early Wellington’s tended to catch fire if their fuel tanks were hit, they had self-sealing gas tanks installed. Eventually heavy bombers, the Vickers Warwick and Avro Lancaster, diminished the Wellington’s role as a bomber. In fact, Vickers developed the Warwick at the same time as the Wellington, and the two bombers shared a large number of components.
During the Second World War, Vickers built Wellington bomber planes at three locations in Britain: Weybridge, Chester, and Blackpool. Altogether there were 11,461 produced. The Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force flew the Wellington. Introduced into service in 1938 finally, in March 1953, the Wellington retired from duty.
