Wisconsin Marine veteran, Sam Floyd, is a coffee roaster who started his small business, Operation Coffee, to raise awareness for veteran suicide and people who suffer with mental health issues. In addition to roasting coffee, Floyd helps veterans through public speaking, peer support, and by donating 10% of his coffee sales to Semper Fi & America’s Fund – which is dedicated to providing urgently needed resources and support for combat wounded, critically ill, and catastrophically injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. By founding Operation Coffee, Wisconsin veteran Sam Floyd (USMC) has truly found his mission. At first, after returning home in 2005 from a tour in Afghanistan, Floyd struggled to adjust to civilian life. Like many veterans navigating their post-military careers, he fought a battle for his mental health and at one point, contemplated taking his own life. Because of his experiences overseas, Floyd felt alienated from his friends and loved ones. Therefore he knew that in order to find happiness at home, rediscovering and pursuing a passion would be essential. That passion? Coffee.

Since Sam had had many impactful conversations over a cup of joe, he decided coffee itself would be his passion. These conversations became the seed for the blossoming idea that would save Floyd’s life — and potentially the lives of other veterans facing the same post-combat mental health challenges.

This is Sam’s newest blend. Contains 100% Arabica coffee. From each bag of Battle Buddy Blend sold he will donate $2.00 directly to Old Glory Honor Flight in Appleton, Wisconsin. To date, Old Glory has taken 5,740 veterans on 63 flights not just to Washington, D.C. but to other places as well including Vietnam and Pearl Harbor.

A Soldier’s Dilemma

When my country called, I answered the call. I served in Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. The everyday rigors of armored patrols and combat took a physical and mental toll on myself and my soldiers. What made it easier to cope with was the fact that we all were experiencing it together. My “Battle Buddies” helped me through and got me home to my family. When I left the military, I found myself in a world that was unfamiliar. I had no battle buddy to talk to anymore. I was home but still lived the war in my head, and no one could relate. It took 15 years for me to realize I needed help and didn’t have the tools to fight this battle alone. “I did not fight alone in Afghanistan, why am I fighting alone now?” I had to take that first step and find a battle buddy. It all started with a discussion over a cup of coffee. We are all just one cup of coffee away from beginning a healing process that could last an entire beautiful lifetime. Have that cup of coffee…be that Battle Buddy!

Thank you for visiting the Wisconsin Veterans Museum website! Since 2013 the WVM has been a proud Smithsonian Affiliate. In addition to award-winning exhibits and in-person events, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum has a strong online presence. Since 1993, the Museum has been located on Capitol Square in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Prior to that time, the Museum was housed in a small room within the State Capitol building itself.
