About Us
The Wisconsin Veterans Museum tells the stories of Wisconsinites who have served in the U.S. military from the Civil War to the present day. Located on Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin, we are a Smithsonian Affiliate and an educational activity of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. Every purchase supports our mission to preserve and share the stories of Wisconsin veterans. Thank you.
Why is Wisconsin called the Badger State? During Wisconsin’s lead mining boom in the 1820s, miners dug temporary shelters into hillsides near their work sites instead of building traditional homes. Since these underground dwellings resembled badger dens, the miners were said to ‘live like badgers.’ The nickname has endured becoming one of Wisconsin’s most recognizable state symbols.
