Why is Wisconsin called the Badger State? During Wisconsin’s lead mining boom in the 1820s, miners dug temporary shelters into hillsides near their work sites instead of building traditional homes. Since these underground dwellings resembled badger dens, the miners were said to ‘live like badgers.’ The nickname has endured becoming one of Wisconsin’s most recognizable state symbols.
