A Historical Connection
What’s with the flamingos, you may ask? What began as a student prank at UW–Madison became one of Madison’s most recognizable symbols—and eventually its official bird.
In 1979, members of the Pail and Shovel student party covered Bascom Hill with 1,008 plastic flamingos. Since 2012, the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association’s annual Fill the Hill event has raised more than $3.5 million through over 21,000 gifts by inviting donors to place flamingos on the hill.
In 2009, Madison named the plastic flamingo its official bird. When Forward Madison began play in 2018, the professional soccer team adopted the flamingo as its logo.
